Emergency Physician at Mission Hospital Receives Highest Honor

Michael Ritter, M.D. has been named the 2011 Physician of the Year by the Orange County Medical Association (OCMA). The award recognizes an OCMA member physician who, throughout his or her career has exemplified what it means to be an accomplished physician. The Physician of the Year honor was presented to Dr. Ritter at the OCMA General Membership Dinner on May 17. “I am thrilled to see such an incredibly talented individual recognized for his accomplishments and hard work,” said Markie Cowley, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Mission Hospital. “He is extremely knowledgeable, offering key insights and is also well respected by the medical community. Dr. Ritter has always been an engaged member of the medical staff, serving the needs of our community with compassion and good humor.”
An affiliate of Mission Viejo Emergency Medical Associates, Dr. Ritter has received various honors and awards throughout his medical career. Among his many accomplishments, Mission Hospital received the Codman Award given by the Joint Commission in recognition of the hospital’s Rapid Response Team, a program that trains and empowers rapid response nurses to treat critically ill or injured patients and reduce patient mortality rates. Dr. Ritter was one of the physician champion’s for development of the team.
“Dr. Ritter is a highly valued member of the emergency services team,” said Robert Winokur, M.D., Chairman of Emergency Medicine, Mission Hospital. “Since the implementation of the Rapid Response Team, we have reduced the number of patient mortality incidents by more than 50 percent. His desire to teach the staff is unsurpassed, and I look forward to continuing to work with him in making the emergency services department at Mission among the best in the nation.”
Dr. Ritter is the Associate Medical Director of Emergency Services at Mission Hospital, where he has also chaired many medical staff committees. Currently, he is the chair of the Credentials Committee and a member of the Medical Executive Committee at Mission and Quality Improvement Committee at the St. Joseph Health (SJHS). Board Certified by the American Board of Emergency Management, Dr. Ritter also served as Chief of Staff at Mission Hospital in 2006.

It is an honor to have been nominated by my peers and I am thankful for all the support I have received from my physician colleagues, nurses, ancillary staff and administration at Mission Hospital and St. Joseph Health,” said Dr. Ritter. “I look forward to continuing to contribute to Mission and the medical community by exemplifying excellence in advanced care, and providing the best care for our of our patients.”
With a passion for teaching, Dr. Ritter is extremely active in the community, talking to students and local organizations about various health issues, including alcohol and drug abuse among teenagers. The Assistant Clinical Professor for the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), he also teaches emergency medicine to residents. Dr. Ritter received his medical degree from (UCI), where he completed his residency in emergency management in 1994 and was selected the Resident of the Year by the senior medical student class.
Dr. Ritter currently lives in Corona del Mar with his wife Melissa and 11-year-old son Max. In his spare time, Dr. Ritter enjoys working on all sorts of home repair projects at his at-home workshop.
