Values in Action Awards
Mission Hospital presents the Values in Action Awards annually to honor
four individuals who each embody our core values: Dignity, Service, Excellence
and Justice. Hundreds of deserving candidates are nominated by their peers
for going above and beyond to provide an extra measure of care or service.
A committee determines one winner in each of our four core values.
2016 Values in Action Award Winners
2016 Dignity Award Winner
The Dignity Award is given to Christina Barrera-Escober, Transporter/Lift
Tech, Integrated Services for listening and seeking to understand and
respect all people and their differing viewpoints. The words on her badge
read “Transporter/Lift Tech,”but Christina Barrera-Escober
knows her role is about so much more than taking a patient from one point
to another. Christina considers it an opportunity to make a positive impact
on someone else’s day. She is a true reflection of the dignity and
care our patients, families and fellow employees may expect to find at
2016 Service Award Winner
The Service Award recipient is Maria E. Castillo Communications and Marketing
Specialist, Strategic Services. Awarded for displaying courtesy and shaping
a service oriented environment that understands and responds sensitively
to unique needs. Because the Mission Hospital Marketing Department is
located in one of the Mission Hospital medical office buildings, lost
patients frequently wander in trying to get to a doctor appointment. Maria
Castillo, Communications and Marketing Specialist, always stops whatever
she is doing, smiles, and makes sure they get to where they need to go.
And the gracious way she does it helps them realize they’ve definitely
come to the right place.
2016 Excellence Award Winner
The Excellence Award is presented to June Melford, RN-BC, MSN, CRRN Clinical
Nurse Specialist, Nursing Center of Excellence. Awarded for encouraging
new ideas, seeking to discover and share best practices, and creating
an environment of continuous learning. The results of her work have rippled
throughout both Mission Hospital campuses. Clinical Nurse Specialist June
Melford has been a leader in bringing evidence-based practice to both
campuses, creating an environment of continuous learning and excellence.
She is a tireless patient advocate who invites curiosity among fellow
staff, mentors their research efforts and empowers them to share the answers
2016 Justice Award Winner
The Justice Award is given to LuzElena Pinzon, MSW Community Care Navigator,
Community Benefit for demonstrating enthusiasm in calling others to work
together to understand and serve the needs of the vulnerable in our community.
She serves the most vulnerable members of our community with passion and
joy. Mission Hospital Social Worker LuzElena Pinzon, MSW, focuses on meeting
the full needs of the patients and community members she encounters —
body, mind and spirit. LuzElena embodies all of our Mission Hospital values
as she enthusiastically calls us together to help them as they journey
