MHAP Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mission Hospital Affiliated Physicians?
Mission Hospital Affiliated Physicians, Commonly referred to as MHAP, is an association of independent physicians located in South Orange County. MHAP contracts with major health plans to provide managed care service for our network of physicians and HMO members.

How do I choose a Primary Care Physician?
We encourage enrollees to view the list of PCP's under the Physician Search function when choosing a Primary Care Physician (PCP). Some PCPs belong to medical groups in addition to MHAP, so make sure you select the PCP ID number that aligns you with MHAP so you can be assured of access to Mission Hospital and affiliated specialists. To find a MHAP physician, click here.

Do I need an Authorization to see a specialist?
If you have signed up with a health maintenance organization (HMO) plan, your Primary Care Physician (PCP) directs all of your medical care. When your PCP sees you in his or her office and feels it is necessary for you to be treated by a specialist, a referral will be submitted to the MHAP Utilization Management Department requesting approval for this consultation with a specialist.

What if I am in need of emergency or after-hours services?
If your condition is a life-threatening emergency, call 911. For all other medical conditions, please contact your Primary Care Physician (PCP) and he/she will direct your medical care.

What happens if I need hospitalization?
MHAP has an excellent team of physicians dedicated solely to caring for you during your hospital stay. Mission Hospital is the partner hospital for MHAP. All hospitalizations will be directed to our Case Management team. The team is responsible for directing your care, including: arranging specialty care consultations, ordering diagnostic tests and keeping your Primary Care Physician (PCP) updated on important developments on your progress.

What if I need medical attention while I am away from home?
Most health plans have their own provisions for illnesses and emergencies that occur away from home. Please contact your health plan directly at the phone number on your health plan I.D. card. Upon your return home, please contact your Primary Care Physician (PCP) so he or she can determine if follow-up care is necessary.

Where should I go for Urgent Care Services?
MHAP is contracted with three conveniently located urgent care centers should urgent after hour services be required.
