Dr. Tammelin received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in 1975. He completed a rotating internship and Internal Medicine residency training at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.
Following his residency he served in the US Air Force as a clinical instructor in Internal Medicine where he helped train physician assistants, interns and residents and worked with the pulmonary fellows. He served as the Director of Medical Education.
He completed his pulmonary critical care fellowship at the University of California, Irvine. While at UCI he was involved in research in Sleep Medicine and served as the pulmonary consultant to the sleep center, one of the first such programs in the US.
On joining Mission Internal Medical Group in 1982 he developed the pulmonary and critical care division which is now composed of 4 pulmonary/critical care physicians who are committed to providing pulmonary and critical care services to mission hospital.
Dr. Tammelin has been the Continuing Medical Education Director for the past 20 years at Mission Hospital, coordinating physician education, yearly conferences and meetings. He also serves Childrens Hospital in a similar role. For 15 years he served as the Director of Respiratory Care Services at Mission Hospital, coordinating care with the trauma and neurocritical care service. He has published and made presentations in trauma medicine. While at Mission Internal Medical Group he has been involved in a variety of leadership activities, including board member, corporation president and physician recruiter.
In 1997, he founded and directed the Mission Hospitalist Consulting Group, one of the first hospitalist services in Orange County. The program has continued to grow and enjoys an excellent reputation as the premier hospitalist group at Mission Hospital.
Since starting practice in 1982 he has been involved in the practice of Sleep Medicine which has remained his primary interest. He has been the Director of Mission Sleep Disorders Institute since 1994 and has overseen its development and growth. The sleep center is the only accredited center in south Orange County and is dedicated to the evaluation and management of all sleep disorders.
