Open Heart Surgery

Mission Hospital is known for its cardiac surgery program. More adult cardiac surgery is performed here than at any other hospitals in Orange County. The adult cardiac surgery program at Mission Hospital offers a complete range of surgical procedures, including coronary artery bypass surgery, valve repair and replacement, repair of aortic and ventricular aneurysms, minimally invasive mitral valve repair and replacement, and more. Our patients do very well postoperatively. Our postoperative complication rates are also significantly lower than the national averages for atrial fibrillation, stroke, infection and necessary re-operations. These data are tracked through the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), a national registry that open heart programs benchmark against for outcomes. Recently, Mission Hospital received three-star recognition, which is the highest rating achieved from STS.

As a leader in cardiovascular surgery, our expert and specialized cardiac surgeon Dr. Sevak Darbinian is known for his clinical expertise and innovative technique. He is the first cardiac surgeon who used a homograft to replace an infected tricuspid valve. He was recently named a Physician of Excellence by the Orange County Medical Association. His hard work and special dedication has led Mission Hospital's cardiac surgery program to national recognition.
