Dementia and Alzheimer’s

Disorders of aging remain a significant concern. As the society ages, more and more people are concerned over our ability to maintain memory. Dementia is a state of mind, with progression of cognitive impairment over time. One of the cognitive domains affected is the ability to maintain memory. Alzheimer’s disease is one of the common dementia disorders, but it is not the only disorder of dementia. If you or a loved one is concerned, you can be assessed by a program called the OC Vital Aging Program. Along with a partnership with Hoag, the neurology services at Mission Hospital and Mission Heritage can assess your concerns. With the results, you may have a better understanding of your concerns. If need arises, there is neurological expertise in further diagnosing and understanding what may impact your memory.

Movement Disorders

Disorders in movement are conditions that may impact our ability to function physically. Although many do not understand the term movement disorder, the most common concern to help understand this is Parkinson’s disease. Similar to dementia, portions of the brain is changing, a process called degeneration. Oppose to dementia, which impacts our cognitive abilities, the parts of the brain impact our ability to maintain normal movement with Parkinson’s disease. Some disorders may not be as disabling as Parkinson’s disease, but these disorders alter normal functions every day. The neurological services at the Mission Neuroscience Institute (MNI) can help in diagnosing and understanding the condition. Advances in surgical techniques to aid a Parkinson sufferer is also available at Mission Hospital.
