Mission Hospital Offers Patients the Newest 'Gee Whiz' Medical Technology with New 64-slice CT Scanner

Latest Imaging Equipment Provides Faster, More Detailed Body Scans

Mission Viejo, CA (Jun 23, 06) - Mission Hospital has acquired a state-of-the-art computerized tomography [CT] scanner from Siemens Medical Systems. The 64-slice scanner provides faster, more detailed body scans that enable physicians to provide even more accurate diagnoses and to replace some invasive procedures.

With this new imaging equipment, physicians at Mission Hospital and CHOC at Mission now have the ability to look more closely at the body as well as view it from multiple angles in vivid, almost photographic detail in areas less than one millimeter in size. Scans for most routine examinations take less than 10 seconds, so patient exposure to radiation is also minimized.

'The hospital’s new 64-slice CT scanner will help our doctors diagnose diseases faster and with more accuracy than a conventional scanner,' said Peter F. Bastone, President and CEO of Mission Hospital. 'This is cutting edge imaging technology that keeps our healthcare ministry at the forefront of care.'

The term 'slice' refers to the numerous cross-section images the scanner can take in a scan. Each 'slice' of the body is about as thick as five pieces of notebook paper, which is several times the number of images taken by standard 4- and 16-slice CT scanners. More images means more detail for physicians, leading to better precision for patient diagnoses and treatment.

Mission Hospital’s 64-slice CT can be employed in many areas of medicine, from assessing injuries of trauma patients to finding tumors to plotting surgeries. Doctors may also use the scanner for cardiac imaging or in place of a number of invasive procedures like colonoscopies.
