Mission Hospital Announces 2011 Chief of Staff

Neurosurgeon Farzad Massoudi, M.D., has been named Mission Hospital’s new Chief of Staff, a role that he will serve through December 2011. Nominated by his peers, he will oversee policies and procedures set forth by the Medical Executive Committee (MEC) and will be responsible for the self-governance of the medical staff at both Mission Hospital’s Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach campuses.

Well prepared for his new role, Dr. Massoudi is already known in the medical community for leading the way. He has invented medical devices in the arena of spinal implants, and is one of the pioneers in the field of non-invasive surgery using the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System for outpatient treatment of brain and spine tumors as well as Trigeminal Neuralgia, which causes episodes of intense facial pain. Dr. Massoudi has expertise in minimally invasive brain and spine surgery, complex spinal fusion surgeries, brain tumors and frameless stereotactic radiosurgery.

“Dr. Massoudi has always been a very active and compassionate member of the medical staff,” said Markie Cowley, Chief Operating Officer, Mission Hospital. “He is extremely knowledgeable, insightful and well respected by his peers, all of which will contribute to his success in his new leadership role. I look forward to working in partnership with Dr. Massoudi to fulfill our Ministry's Vision.”

“I look forward to continuing to ensure that innovative advanced care is available at Mission Hospital for our community,” expressed Dr. Massoudi. “I believe in being relentless in the pursuit of goals but flexible in how you attain them, and I look forward in working with the medical staff and hospital administration to foster a spirit of cooperation and collaboration to achieve our goals this year.”

Prior to his appointment as Chief of Staff, Dr. Massoudi served as Chief of Staff Elect, Secretary-Treasurer of the MEC and co-chair of the Credentials Committee. Board Certified in the field of Neurosurgery, he also serves as President of Orange County Neurosurgical Associates (OCNA) in Laguna Hills and a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, California Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He has been practicing medicine in Orange County for more than ten years, and has participated in numerous research studies, written clinical articles and presented various lectures on neurosurgery and spine surgery. Dr. Massoudi completed his Doctorate in Medicine from the Georgetown University School of Medicine and his residency in neurosurgery from UCLA.

When he isn’t working, Dr. Massoudi loves spending time with his family, including his wife Kimberly, two-year-old daughter Ella and four-year-old son Cameron. Dr. Massoudi holds a strong devotion to family, noting that he would not be who he is today without his parents. Though he has no plans to soon retire, Dr. Massoudi wouldn’t mind spending more time in Bora Bora, which he says is his favorite place in the world.

Dr. Massoudi will join the following elected officials on the MEC: Chief of Staff-Elect Rudy Marquez, M.D., Secretary-Treasurer Todd Lempert M.D. and 2010 Chief of Staff Christopher Nolan, M.D. The MEC also includes the elected chairmen of the six medical staff departments and the appointed chairmen of medical staff committees. This committee oversees the quality of medical care provided in the hospital, resolves issues related to medical care or its medical staff members, and works collaboratively with hospital administration and the Board of Trustees to fulfill the hospital's obligations to its patients.
