Golf Classic raises more than $290,000 to support cancer care at Mission Hospital

Since the tournament began 25 years ago, nearly $5 million has been raised to support new technology and various patient care enhancements.

The Mission Hospital Golf Classic continued its rich philanthropic tradition by netting more than $290,000. This successful event, held at Pelican Hill Golf Club, was made possible thanks to the leadership of Golf Chair Jim Bastian and the generosity of Tournament Sponsor Audi Mission Viejo • INFINITI of Mission Viejo • Volvo Cars Mission Viejo and Forecaddie Sponsor Ira Hermann of Capstone Partners Financial.

The golf tournament proceeds will support the development of the Judi and Bill Leonard Institute for Cancer Prevention, Treatment and Wellness at Mission Hospital. The Leonard Cancer Institute will bring together talented clinicians, innovative clinical trials, and cutting-edge technology to compassionately care for the body, mind and spirit of our patients and family members. Our comprehensive cancer center will establish a place of new possibilities, hope and healing, ensuring South County residents have local access to specialized cancer care, not previously available.

The most inspiring moment of the event was when Ladera Ranch resident Erin Carlberg thanked Mission Hospital for saving her husband, Scott’s, life after he suffered a traumatic brain injury. “I stand before you today to tell you that Mission Hospital and its doctors and nurses are super heroes.” Erin also thanked the community philanthropists who participated in the tournament for their support. “We are here today because of you. Because of your generosity. Thank you for supporting Mission Hospital from the bottom of my heart.”

The first place tournament finish on the north course was claimed by the team of Don Compton, Dick Gott, Robert Hill and Dave Neish. On the south course, the CLIMATEC team won with Ed Empero, Scott O’Donnell and Alex Pavlis.

One of the annual highlights of the event is the raffle drawing of a new Audi, INFINITI or Volvo, provided by Audi Mission Viejo • INFINITI of Mission Viejo • Volvo Cars Mission Viejo. Don Leiblein, a longtime Mission Hospital employee, was the lucky winner.

Our Platinum Sponsors included Airgas USA, LLC – An AirLiquide Company, Diversified Thermal Services, Inc., Healthcare Design & Construction, LLC, HGA, NCA, Snyder Langston and Welltower, Inc., Meyer & Reeder, Inc., Mission Hospital Emergency Department Physician Group, Prestige Office Coffee Service, Robert and Carol Summers Family Trust and WP Electric & Communications, Inc.

Golfers enjoyed incredible food on the course provided by Hanna’s Restaurant & Bar and Buffalo Wild Wings, treats from Tosi Superbites and ice cream provided by Travis Mathews. Donated refreshments included Breaker Bourbon, Ketel One Citroen Lemonade, Lagunitas Brewing Company, MillerCoors and NOLET’S Silver Dutch Mules.

In addition to an incredible day of golf, many tournament attendees won raffle and tournament prizes, as well as live and silent auction items. Among the most popular items: a mountain getaway to Beaver Creek, Colorado, 4.5L Ketel One bottle signed by Carl Nolet, Jr. and golf legend Arnold Palmer, ultimate UCLA sports package for football and basketball, Laguna Beach escape at the Surf & Sand Resort, and finally, golf at Pelican Hill Golf Club and a bungalow at The Resort at Pelican Hill.
